Cairngorms Bike Bus

Ride to school right!

In partnership with the Cairngorms National Park Authority, the Spin project is setting up a Bike Bus to and from Aviemore and Deshar primary schools from April to June 2025

A Bike Bus is an organised group of cyclists, with a set route and leaders, and stops along the way to pick up more riders. By riding to school together, we can have more fun, be safer and encourage less confident cyclists! It’s a chance to start your day with some fresh air and exercise, and ride to school with your friends.

There are 16 ‘seats’ on the bus, which will be led by two qualified, experienced and friendly ‘drivers’ and take a roughly 4.5km route through each village to school, picking up riders along the way. Spaces will be prioritised for P1-P3 pupils, but all pupils are welcome and if space allows so too are parents and carers.

We need you!

While we start the Bike Bus, it will be led by qualified and experienced cycling instructors. But that’s just the beginning! We will be looking for parent/carer volunteers who are interested in getting involved and leading the Bike Bus in future. You’re not on your own though — the Spin Project will provide support, training and a free Cycling Scotland qualification course, alongside ongoing support to keep the bus running. Please get in touch if you’re interested!

How to Join the Bike Bus

  • Please sign up to the Bike Bus using this form, making sure to submit contact info in case of emergency, and any relevant medical/allergy information. Personal information will only be used by the Spin Project in the context of the Bike Bus, and only shared with ride leaders. Join the Bike Bus WhatsApp community to RSVP for that week’s Bike Bus and to receive news.

  • Children and adults joining the Bike Bus must have a bike in safe working order.

  • Helmets are compulsory. They must be in good condition and fit snugly onto your head. Hi-viz clothing will be provided by the bus leader.

  • You must accompany your child to the bus stop, so that in the event of an issue they are not left alone. The bus won’t have time to wait for long, so please arrive at the stop head of time. You or another appropriate adult must also be available to meet your child at the pickup point on the return journey. Time is less tight in the afternoon, so if this is an issue please let us know, and we will try to drop your child off at home.

  • If you would like to join the Bike Bus, please get in touch with project coordinator Huw (info@spinproject.scot). For insurance purposes the group cannot exceed 16 riders, but we would love to be joined by parents/carers wherever possible, and especially by those who are interested in becoming Bike Bus leaders!

Meet the Bus Drivers

Matt and Josh will be leading the Bike Bus — thankfully they both LOVE riding their bikes! Not only that, they’re fully qualified cycling leaders with lots of experience helping other people to enjoy cycling too, so the Bike Bus will be in good hands.
